Not too long ago, you needed
to cover your windows to keep out light and the cold. Decorating to
create a look or feel was not part of the plan. Your choices were
limited to Venetian blinds, roll up shades, or verticals. While
these products still exist, they have been updated to take on an
added function; style. Blinds are now available in metal, wood, and
composite materials, in various widths and with and without tapes.
Shades can be flat, pleated, honeycomb or Roman. Verticals can be
fabric or vinyl, free hanging or inserted into a sleeve, and 2” or 3
1/2” wide. Today’s options also includes new designs, such as
Vignette, Luminette, Silhouette and Alouette; window dressings that
are difficult to categorize, but that can add a new and distinctive
look to your home or office.
Before choosing
your window dressings you must determine the look and feel that you
are trying to create, as well as the level of privacy you require
and how much light control you want. Oftentimes the sheerer fabrics
will give the most formal and decorative look, while blinds and
verticals will be more casual and practical. The newer products
have ingenuously married some of these functions together to create
products that can be both formal and practical; both decorative and
casual.
Window treatments
are the required final touch, and can change the look and feel of a
room. It seems that the world of window dressings is changing every
day!
